Chakalaka recipe is a highly sought after treasure that unlocks the pleasures of a South African tasty delicacy that will leave you licking soup off your fingers.
Ingredients:
- 250 g white onion, finely chopped
- 150 g mixture of red, green and yellow peppers
- 30 g red chillies
- 150 g cabbage, well chopped
- 200 g grated carrots
- 250 g tomatoes, roughly cut
- 60 ml sunflower oil
- 2 ml tumeric
- 2 ml curry powder
- 2 ml salt
- 15 g Aromat
- 400 g baked beans
- 15 ml hot fruit chutney
- 15 ml brown vinegar
- 15 ml brown sugar
Instructions:
Heat the cooking oil over a medium set to heat in a casserole dish.
Add onions, chillies, and bell peppers in the dish with heated cooking oil.
Once it softens put the cabbage and carrots. Give it time to soften then add the tomatoes.
As you stir the mixture, you need to add the turmeric, curry powder, salt, and Aromat, to give the mix a pleasant taste.
Give it a few seconds then add; baked beans, hot fruit chutney, brown vinegar and brown sugar.
Serve hot or cold. Some people will advise you to let it cool then you refrigerate until the following day. This is to allow the meal to get the right taste.
